On Sunday 17th June 2012, Billingsgate Roman Bathhouse welcomed the first official visitors to the site. The UCL and Museum of London Young Archaeologist Clubs and the Council for British Archaeology, London visited the site as part of a ‘special viewing’. This was designed to act as a preliminary test event for the summer open events on 14th / 15th July and the 22nd / 23rd September.
Visitors were shown around the site, where volunteers from the Museum of London and the UCL Institute of Archaeology gave talks on a range of topics, from the history of the site, Roman Londinium, Roman bathing to the excavation and stratigraphy on the site. Visitors were able to handle real Roman building material from the site, including roof tiles with Roman animal paw-prints that have been preserved for over 1700 years!
After the success of the day, we have been able to improve our plans for the summer openings.
We will be open to the public during the Festival of British Archaeology on the weekend of the 14th / 15th July 2012. We will be open from 11.00 – 16.00.
